I’d have to say that viewing the 4K footage projected from the new Sony 4K projector was sharper than anything I’ve seen in the movies. But, I’ve always silently complained that the movies in theaters were too soft anyway. So I’m glad we’re moving in this direction.

I got to play around with the prototypes of the new Scarlet and Epic. They feel very solid like an old arri film camera. And with the mini primes it has a very Bolex feel to it. Interestingly, the technology I thought was just too novel and silly, after viewing it in person, may have some huge potential. I’m talking about 3D television. This is not your grandfather’s 3D for sure. It begs for a larger screen, however. I wanted the frames of the tv screen beyond my peripheral vision. This should be a very interesting area in the next few years of development.

Okay, back to the cameras…

On the bottom end, the scarlet all-in-one 2/3″ didn’t have XLR inputs, only a minijack. It’s not the end of the world, but if you want XLR you’ll have to buy their I/O box or the audio I/O box which takes you over the $5,000 mark. Or deal with 3rd party stuff. For my personal use, I might consider the interchangeable 2/3″ and use my Nikon lenses, which should produce very nice results (though everything will have that zoom effect). I think the quality of their sensor is where they’ll separate themselves from the other guys. Honestly, I still want full frame, interchangeable lenses, no line skipping (Canon), and be able to use it directly or almost directly out of the box. Personally, anything short of this is still a compromise and a reason not to totally abandon film. The company that can produce a camera without a single “fatal flaw” will have my money and everyone else’s. I love Canon and I love what the RED guys are doing but it will be another few years before we get there at a price less than that of a small car. Neither RED nor Canon (or anyone else for that matter) does this yet, unless you spend $five digits minimum.

I honestly think that RED made a mistake (or at least got distracted) with the SLR stills function when they found out Canon was releasing HD video on their SLRs. Canon added the function as a “cool feature” but didn’t realize how hungry people were for full frame VIDEO. Instead of having an SLR stills function, RED should have just added a feature that easily extracts stunning stills from the motion picture capture. That way you aren’t distracted to shoot stills while shooting video. Going in reverse seems to make some sense though especially if you were a news photographer who needs the portability aspects.

The biggest argument that comes out of RED in criticizing the Canon DSLR cameras is the line skipping and H.264 compression scheme. Nevertheless, Canon cameras (5D Mark II and the 7D) are immensely popular due to their large sensors and the gorgeous images that come from them. RED is barking a lot right now but at the wrong Milk Man. When showcasing and comparing footage with Canon, they are using their $17,000 cameras (About $40K-$50K to be able to shoot properly) with their latest Mysterium-X sensor which hasn’t been released yet against a $2700 5DII body, or a $1500 7D body with sensors that were developed a few years ago. RED also compared it to the Sony F-35. I’d prefer to see the Scarlets and Epics compared with the Arriflex D-21 or something from Panavision like the Phantom 35, cameras in your league. Or at least compare the images from a 2/3″ chip to the full frame on the Canon.

Despite having the “New kid on the block” syndrome, I like the spirit of RED and what they are doing to shake up the industry. I have no doubt they’ll be around for a while and provide some great tools for filmmakers.

The Post
————————
Every day, there are more and more Craigs List posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely. For more information on this subject, please visit www.no-spec.com.

So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them.

And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free… please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

Yes, it’s living in Los Angeles. It’s hard to avoid the car. How did we ever survive the pre 1980′s without built-in cup holders found in the console of every new car? Anyway, a few days ago, I was lucky enough to be a passenger. So I was able to snap this photo. The typical rule of the car pool lane is that you must have at least two people in the vehicle in order to qualify. Some places you need at least three. It’s great for soccer moms. But does this actually reduce the number of cars on the road? Or does it simply reward those that carry more people? What if instead in order to qualify for the car pool lane, you must have two licensed drivers? That way, you would actually make it possible to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. As it is these days, the car pool lanes are just as clogged and even slower at times.

Donnie’s Tree, student work at Big Bear City Fest
August 19, 2005
California’s Big Bear City Film Festival Showcases Papa G Studio’s Donnie’s Tree

It’s good to know there are professional films coming from student filmmakers. Writer/director, and producer Insung Hwang, has brilliantly created Donnie’s Tree, a short film about an elderly man’s desire to come to terms with his wife by means of a kumquat tree. As a graduate student at Chapman University in Orange County, California, Insung created his characters, plot, and locations all in a 7 day shooting schedule for this 22 minute film.

Cinematographer, John Ames, (Ghost Stories, The Appointment) provides a picturesque, rich colored landscape of the California desert-scape. His technique and Insung’s choice of 35mm film, the way a true production is meant to be, compliments this festival favorite. The point of depicting the elderly as main characters brings to mind Ron Howard’s Cocoon (1985). As in this Jessica Tandy comedic-drama, Insung brings to life an emotional husband and wife, to the tune of a young couple. At first the audience sees Donnie (Ian Sarsen Druid) as his wife’s puppet, being told when to cook dinner, how to act, and even to what to do with his beloved tree. When his wife, Carmen (Angela McEwan) replaces his tree with her new kumquat tree, he is furious, but still lives under her command.

When Donnie discovers the tree has traits beyond fruit production he only then believes to be free. Donnie’s Tree is alone worth watching until the end for Donnie’s depicted desire to be back with his “witch” of a wife. The poison turned aphrodisiac of a tree keeps the audience attentive towards the outcome of Carmen’s destiny.

It’s great to know a male filmmaker can produce such inclinations towards a red dress, a hope for improved romance, and a couple’s love-making all within elderly characters. After all, at one time or another, we all wonder whether our grandparents sleep in the same bed.

You can look forward to watching Donnie’s Tree at The Big Bear Film Festival (California) in September. As a finalist at the Kansas City Film Festival the film also counts Syracuse International Film & Video Festival, IFP Cinema Lounge, and numerous others towards its welcomed audience-accepted screenings.

I think it’s officially been almost a decade since I last redesigned the Papa G website. Things have changed a lot since. In particular, technology has made things more complicated and sophisticated. Ten years ago, it was cool just to have a website. Now it is not enough just to have web presence. You must have content to drive traffic. Social networking such as Facebook and Twitter are part of the everyday lingo. The new site is driven by WordPress which will allow much easier updates of content as well as adding much needed interactivity.

Design has been and always will be a great creative profession allowing the use of creative and imaginative skills for practical purposes. On a personal level, my early years in design school at Cal Poly, and my graduate work in film at Chapman were great foundations for this. It has taken me a long way in allowing me to create everything from logos for Disney to movie posters of John Travolta or Drew Barrymore. Lately though, I want more, much more. In formula 1 racing, oftentimes car manufacturers will research, experiment, and build exotic cars to win races. They pass down the technology into their production models. Similarly, fine art can have a a dramatic effect in client-based mediums such as graphic design and to some extent, film. I’ve never truly considered myself an “artist.” It was kind of a big word reserved for only people who paint large canvases in oils like my friend Tahir. But it’s as if I was afraid of avoiding consciousness altogether. I’m aware of the abstract possibilities of life, love, and simply being. These things hover around me and I turn the other way because I’m somehow convinced that other people don’t see it and I shouldn’t stick out. If a gay man has his day and comes “out of the closet,” perhaps there is such a day for an artist to declare himself.
