A Better Car Pool Lane

It’s no coincidence that my second blog entry also has to do with car culture. Yes, it’s living in Los Angeles. It’s hard to avoid the car. How did we ever survive the pre 1980′s without built-in cup holders found in the console of every new car? Anyway, a few days ago, I was lucky enough to be a passenger. So I was able to snap this photo. The typical rule of the car pool lane is that you must have at least two people in the vehicle in order to qualify. Some places you need at least three. It’s great for soccer moms. But does this actually reduce the number of cars on the road? Or does it simply reward those that carry more people? What if instead in order to qualify for the car pool lane, you must have two licensed drivers? That way, you would actually make it possible to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. As it is these days, the car pool lanes are just as clogged and even slower at times.
