Throughout
history, artifacts we have created as a society were heavily based
on the tools available at the time of production. Great scientists,
inventors, and artists could not accomplish certain tasks without
the tools at hand. The telescope allowed the astronomer a way to
map out the heavens. The brush allowed the artist to stroke a picture
onto a canvas. Whatever our choice of tools, utilizing them meant
accepting the unique way each tool affected our visions. If we look
at a painting from afar, we see the picture. Up close, we see the
brush stroke. When photography was invented, many painters took
to the new means in hopes of finding a better solution to painting
a more realistic image. When photography became an artistic medium
in its own right, artists began to exploit the medium to its fuller
potential.
With the wealth of technological wonders available today, we still
cannot escape the effects the tools have on our creative landscape.
When a new idea or method is to take place, it still becomes necessary
to invent a new tool.
If discovering the new tool is the genesis of inventing the tool
itself, it would appear that the only means available in finding
the infinitely small space between the problem and the solution
is the mind. And with all the complex abilities the mind is capable
of, the most powerful tool of the mind is, and has always been...
the imagination.
